5 Contact Lens Care Tips

Contact lenses are generally safe, but incorrect use may cause dryness, inflammation, infection and in extreme cases, blindness. That’s according to Manolette Roque, M.D., an eye specialist at St. Luke’s. Hip tips for preventing eye-and-lens complications:

1. Get a contact lens prescription from a licensed eye doctor (optometrist/ophthalmologist). This needs to be adjusted for proper fitting and best results.

2. Avoid wearing contact lenses overnight, in the shower or while swimming. “Unless prescribed by your eye doctor, don’t sleep with your contact lenses on because it will deprive your cornea of much needed oxygenation and increase your risk of acquiring a potentially eye-blinding infection such as acanthamoeba”, warns Dr. Roque.

3. Always wash hands with a non-perfumed soap before handling contact lenses. Rub and rinse the surface of the contact lens with your fingertip and rinse thoroughly before soaking lenses overnight in a sufficient amount of multipurpose solution. Use only sterile products recommended by your eye doctor to clean and disinfect your lenses. Doing so could lead to a number of sight threatening conditions.

4. Use fresh solution every time. Don’t apply saline solution for lens cleaning or disinfection. The storage case can be breeding ground for bacteria. Make sure to clean the case after each use; keep it open and dry between cleanings. Replace the case at least every three months.

5. Take out your contacts if they are bothering you, urges Dr. Roque. If you experience RSVP (redness, secretion, visual blurring, or pain) visit your eye doctor immediately! Also see your eye doctor regularly for contact lens evaluations.
